# About OpenMeter

OpenMeter is the open source metering and billing platform for AI, API, SaaS, and developer-tool products. It was created to remove the costly infrastructure work behind usage measurement, entitlements, pricing, invoicing, and customer usage visibility. Engineering teams send CloudEvents-compatible usage data to OpenMeter, product teams define packaging and pricing, and finance teams receive auditable billing outputs without each group maintaining a separate system.

OpenMeter joined Kong Inc. in September 2025. The project continues in the open under the Apache 2.0 license, while the managed product is offered as Konnect Metering & Billing on the Kong Konnect platform. The project source, issue tracker, releases, and contribution process are public on GitHub. OpenMeter supports real-time aggregation, product catalogs, subscriptions, prepaid credits, entitlements, usage limits, customer portals, notifications, and integrations such as Stripe.

Security and operational trust are part of the product design. Managed deployments are described in the OpenMeter Trust Center, and the website publishes documentation, an OpenAPI specification, SDK links, security information, contact routes, and legal resources so customers and automated agents can verify what OpenMeter offers and how to work with it.
