# Fastest Way to Ship Usage-Based Billing

OpenMeter by Kong is an open source metering and billing platform for AI, API, SaaS, and developer-tool companies. It collects usage events, aggregates them in real time, enforces entitlements and limits, supports flexible product catalogs, and turns measured usage into invoices and customer-facing insights. Teams can run OpenMeter themselves under the Apache 2.0 license or use the managed Konnect Metering & Billing service on Kong Konnect.

## Build with OpenMeter

OpenMeter helps engineering, product, and finance teams launch usage-based pricing without hard-coding every plan or maintaining a custom metering pipeline. It supports per-unit, tiered, graduated, recurring, prepaid-credit, commitment, and hybrid pricing models. Agents and new integrations should prefer API v3, its machine-readable OpenAPI description, and the official TypeScript or Go v3 client. Legacy v1 and v2 resources remain available for existing OpenMeter Cloud and self-hosted integrations. The platform also provides CloudEvents-compatible ingestion, Stripe integration, webhooks, customer portals, and collectors for Kubernetes, Amazon S3, PostgreSQL, OpenTelemetry, LangChain, and Redpanda Connect.

OpenMeter is designed for high-volume, low-latency usage measurement. Common use cases include AI token and model-cost metering, API monetization, usage-based SaaS billing, prepaid credits, feature entitlements, quotas, customer usage dashboards, cost attribution, and automated invoicing. OpenMeter joined Kong Inc. in September 2025; the open source project remains OpenMeter and the managed service is named Konnect Metering & Billing.
