We built OpenMeter to power usage-based billing for modern software teams. It's open source, built to scale, and designed to give developers the tools they need to meter, price, and bill without getting blocked by finance or infrastructure.
So when it came time to price our own product, we asked ourselves a few questions:
- What would be fair to new projects?
- How can we support growth without punishing scale?
- Can the pricing itself reflect the values of open software?
Today, we are announcing our new pricing strategy, and the thinking behind it.
What We Believe
- Billing should be open-source, it's central to your business operations.
- Pricing should be fair and sustainable so we can keep improving the product and the community.
- Growth should be celebrated, not penalized.
- Transparency matters. You should always know what you're paying for and why.
Most billing providers charge a percentage of your revenue. That might feel easy at first, but it can get expensive fast, especially if you're scaling quickly or have low-margin products.
We've taken a different approach. OpenMeter still charges based on usage and billing volume, but we apply volume discounts automatically. You don't need to talk to sales. You don't need to predict your usage upfront. And yes, we use OpenMeter to bill for OpenMeter.
Our costs go up as your usage grows, mostly due to infrastructure, but they don't scale linearly. So neither does our pricing. This is why we offer volume discounts.
Pricing Plans
OpenMeter comes in different flavors, depending on your needs.
Free Plan
The Free Plan is built for teams just getting started. Maybe you're prototyping a new product, experimenting with AI workloads, or launching a side project. You get access to all the OpenMeter core features, so you can build and test without friction. Free comes with generous usage limits and to get started no credit card required. Once you're ready to scale, you can upgrade to the Pro plan.
Pro Plan
The Pro Plan is designed to scale with your needs, offering generous usage thresholds, higher rate limits, and access to key features like Slack support and compliance documentation. As your usage grows, pricing adjusts with built-in volume discounts, helping you to scale and save more.
Enterprise Plan
If you have custom integration needs, specific security requirements, or large-scale usage, we offer tailored enterprise plans. These include audit logs, SAML SSO, fine-grained access control, and other capabilities that help you stay compliant and connected with your existing systems.
Need a specific cloud region? Want to integrate with your internal ledger or analytics pipeline? Let's talk.
Where We're Headed
We're building more features that will be available as pay-per-use add-ons. This keeps the base price low and gives you the freedom to only pay for what you actually use.
Long term, we're working toward a complete revenue management solution. Metering, pricing, and billing are the starting point.
But we're designing for your whole team:
- Developers get a product they can deploy without needing finance or sales.
- Product Managers can test pricing and packaging, then roll it out with zero engineering lift.
- Sales can create custom deals that sync with what's actually happening in the product.
- Finance gets a clean, audit-ready record of all transactions.
We're building this to support how companies operate today, not ten years ago.
Final Thought
We built OpenMeter to remove friction between teams. Our pricing model is no different. If you're building a usage-based product, the billing system shouldn't be the part that slows you down.
