cover

We're excited to share that OpenMeter is joining Kong Inc. to accelerate investment in AI monetization and flexible billing, while continuing to serve all of our existing and new customers on OpenMeter Cloud.

Why Kong?

Kong provides a unified API connectivity platform, Kong Konnect, for designing, securing, and governing APIs—including AI and event traffic—across clouds and Kubernetes. With OpenMeter becoming part of Kong, organizations will be able to productize and bill for their APIs, AI, and data streams, turning digital assets into new sources of revenue.

For us, the decision was simple: APIs and billing go hand in hand. Modern AI companies need fine-grained control over usage and costs, often enforced directly at the API layer with quotas, credits, rate limits, and entitlements. By joining Kong, we can bring metering, entitlements, and billing closer to where consumption happens: right at the API and AI layer.

With Kong in front of their applications, teams will get out-of-the-box API and AI gateway capabilities; authentication, developer portals, observability, and now billing—helping the next generation of companies go from zero to production faster than ever before.

Shared open source values

OpenMeter has always been built as a true open-source project under Apache 2.0. Kong shares this philosophy: its core products are open source under the same license. Joining Kong means we can stay true to our roots with additional engineering investments to meet the needs of our customers.

Shared modular product philosophy

We designed OpenMeter with the Linux philosophy in mind: loosely coupled, tightly integrated building blocks for metering, entitlements, and billing. Kong Konnect follows the same principle, a powerful platform where customers can pick what they need. Together, an upcoming Konnect metering & billing product powered by OpenMeter will support APIs, AI workloads, and any usage-based billing model.

FAQ

What happens to my current OpenMeter Cloud account?

Nothing changes right now. OpenMeter Cloud will continue to operate as usual to support existing and new customers.

Do I need a Kong Konnect account to keep using OpenMeter?

No. OpenMeter remains a standalone product for now—you can keep using it exactly as you have been.

What happens to OpenMeter's infrastructure and documentation?

We'll continue running OpenMeter's existing infrastructure and documentation until the full feature set is integrated into Kong Konnect at which point we will transition you over.

Will my pricing or plan change?

No immediate changes are planned. Your current plan stays the same, and we'll give plenty of notice for any future updates.

What about the OpenMeter team?

Our entire engineering and design team is joining Kong, along with co-founders Peter Marton (managing the product) and Andras Toth (leading the engineering team). We'll continue supporting OpenMeter Cloud customers while integrating into Kong Konnect.

Will OpenMeter remain open source?

Yes. OpenMeter's repositories will move under Kong, but the project will remain open source with ongoing development.

What does this mean for the OpenMeter roadmap?

With Kong's backing, we're expanding the team. That means we'll be able to tackle bigger projects and deliver new capabilities. That wouldn't have been possible before.

Who do I contact for support?

You can continue reaching out to the OpenMeter team through the same channels you already use, whether that's in-app chat or Slack. Same team, same support.

When will OpenMeter in Kong Konnect be available?

We expect full integration by early 2026, with customer migration following in mid-2026. Be first in line to get hands-on with the new product by signing up to join our beta program.

What benefits should OpenMeter customers expect?

  • With Kong's backing, OpenMeter is here for the long run
  • Launching in five new cloud regions
  • New compliance certifications and security features
  • Faster feature development and improved supportability
  • Access to other Kong Konnect products and capabilities (API/AI Gateway, developer portal, observability, and more)

Will I need to adopt other Kong products in the future?

Just like OpenMeter, Kong Konnect is modular. You only use (and pay for) the products you need. If all you want is metering and billing, that's exactly what you'll get.
